Origins
Toto's early history, which began in 1917, was a reflection of Japan's rapid economic expansion. In the first half of 1917, Toto made products to meet the demands for modern, contemporary urban housing. To achieve this, it employed the first tunnel kiln in the country to produce ceramics in a continuous flow. It also pioneered automation for production control, which helps to increase efficiency and a more consistent production.
In the late 1980s the company began expanding outwards to benefit from sales and new markets. The company established the Cera Trading Company to import and sell other manufacturers' products to enhance its own line of sanitary earthenwares as well as plumbing fittings. This strategy boosted sales and expanded the firm's market share.

In the late 1990s, Toto had shifted its focus to research and development of water-related household appliances. It also improved its distribution system to better meet the needs of customers and to increase profits. The company employed the same approach of just-in-time in its supply chain management as well as sales program. This resulted in a higher level of customer satisfaction.
Toto continues to invent on the toilet technology. Its latest toilet, for instance it has a powerful tornado flush that is more environmentally friendly than traditional toilets. Toto also makes use of recycled water in its production process and has a green procurement policy. Toto also produces faucets, bathtubs and hand dryers that have higher energy efficiency than standard models.
The first Toto museum opened in the year 2015. It features exhibits on Toto's most famous products, their evolution, the group companies (all of which are ceramics), the history of plumbing, and even bath units. In another gallery, visitors can see Toto products that are sold throughout. The museum also has a bathroom that features a WASHLET toilet and other toilet-related innovations.
Before the formation of Toto the band, members of the group did sessions for many musicians. Boz Scaggs album Silk Degrees featured keyboardist David Paich, guitarists Mike Porcaro & Steve Lukather as well as drummers Jeff Porcaro & Steve Lukather. They also played on records by Steely Don, Seals and Crofts and Sonny and Cher.

The album starts out hard with songs like Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to write fantastic AOR tunes that slowly creep into your head. However, the album also includes some slower, more jazzy tracks like The Little Things and Chinatown. And the album ends with Great Expectations, a song that combines folk with distorted AOR and sounds like a complete flop, but works wonderfully well.
After Toto IV the band's fortunes started to plummet. David Hungate left the band to pursue a solo career. The band had a variety of drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the band in the after he was charged with drug abuse. the band continued as a trio featuring Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.

Line-up

The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing proficiency was evident in the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. David Paich's work was more refined, sharper, and less derivative than earlier efforts.

The group's fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial flop and the vocalist Williams was suffering from a severe case of laryngitis which limited his singing capabilities. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming duties were replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.
Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the founding members of Asia were in England in the beginning of 2006 to discuss the possibility that the group could be reformed. This lineup, minus Howe (who was a member of Yes at the time), eventually became known as Toto XIV and toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin.
